Alcoholic Anniversary Dates When Slips Happen

Alcoholic Anniversary Dates When Slips Happen

If you are recovering alcoholic, you have been through the wars. The loss of family, friends, health, money, marriages, girlfriends, careers, jobs, drunk driving, jail-time, need I go on, you been there and done that.

Finally when your back was so far against the wall – the wall fell down, rehab, multiple rehabs, detox, many times to detox, AA meetings, months of AA meetings, years of AA meetings, and now you have six months, one year, two years of clean-time under your belt, but your head is still not 100% clear. You might be close but not there yet. Some of the painful memories have been pushed into the back closet of your mind.

Maybe you have been around a while and have 5 years sobriety or more. Life has repaired itself somehow. All the stuff you pulled when drunk is no longer staring you in the face. Those thoughts have melted away. You are looking forward to bigger and better times, jobs, friends, loves, so many new opportunities. And you have put in all the hard work to be where you are. No one gets sober by accident.

Your mind can play tricks on you, especially around Anniversaries when you are getting a chip and feeling good. You might be out with the guys or the girls and be tempted to have –just one – one won’t hurt – you can handle one. Somehow one turns into three drinks and you had a good time. Now you mind is telling you 30 days later you can have a couple again. You know you shouldn’t, but you do. And a few weeks later you are clubbing or at a cocktail party drinking that you never would have drank at just a few months ago. You have this thing beat! Right? What’s the big deal, you are not hurting anyone, except yourself – and all us alcoholics are pros at hurting ourselves, we have had years of practice.

Suddenly a few weeks later you are drinking daily. Maybe just a few at first, then it slowly gets out-of-hand and you are drinking a lot. Now you are missing work because you are sick. Family members are noticing and getting on your case, but hey, you know what you are doing. The next thing you know you pick-up a DUI. And things were going so well. What happened? You got over-confident and thought being an alcoholic was behind you. It happens. You forget. You get cocky. You start to believe you can handle alcohol again.

Anniversaries are dangerous. They tell us we are okay. And our Alcoholic minds tell us we can celebrate. And we make the ultimate mistake and pick-up just one drink. Ever happen to you? – Well it’s happened to this alcoholic. I had to learn the hard way. It never came easy for me. Maybe it did for you. But not me, I made every mistake in the book. And a few were around my Anniversary dates. Be careful, my words of wisdom from me to you.

  1. Never forget, Alcoholism is a predator that seeks you out even as you are recovering. Alcoholism is never a thing of the past, it will be with us until we pass this world to the next.
