Humility the First Step of an Alcoholic to Recovery
The first step down the path to recovery for an Alcoholic is finding a quality called humility. Without humility there is no chance for any type of recovery. The daily hard -drinking Alcoholic has to humble him or herself to the fact that their drinking is hurting :
• their family
• their friends
• their work performance
• and possibly the rest of their life
If an Alcoholic gets behind the wheel of a car drunk and injures or kills another driver or a pedestrian walking on the side of the road, they are going to jail for possible manslaughter with a motor vehicle. It is not a thought many Alcoholics even consider. Alcoholics are thinking about one thing and that is where do I get my next drink or when is the next time I can get drunk, after work, Friday night, all weekend and so on. The alcoholic is 9 times out of 10 concerned with driving drunk. The sad truth of the matter is the alcoholic has no option but to drive drunk, because most of the time they are drunk.
Finding Humility before it is too Late
The only way to an AA meeting or to Rehab for an Alcoholic is to find a little humility. And why does an Alcoholic find a little humility? Usually because it is forced upon them by their own actions. There are being threatened to lose a job unless they get help. They do end up in a car accident and the judge enters them into Rehab. This is assuming no one was seriously hurt. The Alcoholic finds their spouse is going to leave them if they don’t check in and get help or go to an AA meeting and stop drinking.
Humility is no easy quality for an Alcoholic. Most Alcoholics are arrogant and when it comes to their drinking, no one is going to tell them what to do. The alcohol has a grip on them that is so strong the average person just cannot even begin to grasp. Some event has to trigger the Alcoholic finding just a shred of humility to finally admit to themselves that yes, their drinking is a problem and at least in the short -term they are going to do something about it. Usually for an outside reason as I have noted above. But it is a first step. Going to Rehab, going to AA meetings, will give the drinking Alcoholic at least an once or two of Humility. And maybe that is all they need to start down the path towards recovery.
